Lead Service Line Replacement Program

Take the necessary steps to reduce lead exposure in your home to protect yourself and your loved ones. The City of Chicago has taken measures to reduce incidences of lead poisoning through home inspections, lead testing for paint and water, and the Lead Service Line Replacement Program. This service is offered to income-qualified homeowners.
To be eligible, you must:

  • Own your home (must be a single family home or two-flat)

  • Have a household income below 80% of the area median income ($88,250 for a family of four)

Replacement Process

The service line brings water from the water main into your home. Replacing the line involved digging a trench from the street to your house, where the new copper water service will enter through the floor or the wall and connect to your existing plumbing at the first water shut-off valve. A less invasive approach includes trenchless construction, which runs the new service to the main underground and causes less disturbance to the surrounding area. However, the type of procedure performed will depend on several factors specific to each replacement.

Please call the 15th Ward Office to schedule a service line replacement at (773) 823-1539.

Chicago's drink water meets all national, state, and industry standards for safety because the city adds corrosion control, which coats the pipes to help prevent lead from dissolving into our water. However, feel free to call the Ward Office for a free lead test kit if you're concerned about lead.
